Romania
Romania has an array of microclimates that provide the perfect landscape for growing grapes from Moldava along the Carpathian mountain range and along the banks of the Danube River. With a surprisingly large 200,000 hectares under vine, Romania is still not well known for producing wine. The large-scale vineyards are from the country’s time under communist rule which industrialised wine production. From the 1990s onwards, Romanian winemakers began to focus more on quality rather than quantity. With both indigenous and international varieties, the two are often segregated to express their unique attributes. Varieties such as Merlot and Pinot Noir have been very successful but the focus is on their native varieties which are spicy and complex such as the Feteasca Negra which translates to Black Maiden.
