Burgundy, France

Historical standard-setting producers of Crémant

Using the méthode traditionnelle and only the best fruit, Vitteaut-Alberti’s award-winning Crémant de Bourgogne has the elegant personality and finesse widely associated with Champagne without the hefty price tag. Through their meticulous standards and excellent quality, Vitteaut-Alberti contributed to the creation of the legal Crémant de Bourgogne AOC in 1975 and since have focused on expanding their own plantings of grapes specifically gown for Crémant.

How we found them/How Richard found them: It’s amazing to be working with such an influential name in French sparkling wine. I came across Vitteaut-Alberti when our Burgundy producer brought me a bottle as a gift. I loved it so much! I did some research and could not believe that, with all their history and prestige, their wines were not in the UK yet!

In 1951, in the traditional village of Rully, birthplace of sparkling Burgundy wines since 1822, Mr Lucien Vitteaut and his wife Maria, née Alberti, opened the Maison Vitteaut-Alberti. They chose to focus on méthode traditionnelle sparkling white wines and quickly attracted a faithful following among restaurateurs and private customers. The family was determined to, together with other renowned local producers, establish a cahier des charges to guarantee the quality of the region’s Crémant. Gérard Vitteaut, the couple’s son, would be an active member of the working group behind the creation of the Crémant de Bourgogne AOC in 1975. Thus started a new age of understanding and recognition of this historical sparkling wine. Gérard and his wife Danielle were instrumental in expanding the Maison and investing in new equipment. They also made the strategic decision of planting the family’s first own vineyard (until then all the wine was produced with bought fruit) in 1978 and since the total vineyard area has grown to 22 hectares across the Côte Chalonnaise and the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune.

Vitteaut-Alberti’s range includes Crémants and Vins Mousseaux, both varietals and blends of Chardonnay, Aligoté and Pinot Noir. The house’s grape of election though is Chardonnay and all their Premium Cuvées are exquisite Blanc de Blancs expressions. A good example is the Cuvée Spéciale “Agnès” named after Agnès Vitteaut, oenologist and 3rd generation at the helm of the family business.
