Oliver’s Taranga

McLaren Vale, Australia

Small-batch wines full of Australian character

Oliver’s Taranga is a sixth-generation family business dating back to 1839, when the Taranga family moved from the UK and settled in Australia to start a new life. Against the trend, amongst most British settlers, to plant cereal crops and orchards, Oliver decided to plant vineyards and become a grape grower! The business, carefully kept and managed by the Oliver family, has grown and evolved while keeping its original ethos: to grow the best quality fruit to produce quality, small-batch wines that are expressive of variety and vintage.

Interesting fact: Oliver’s Taranga were prized grape growers before they made their own wine, and have long been selling premium grapes to prestigious estates such as d’Arenberg, Penfolds, Wirra Wirra and Seppeltsfield. Don Oliver and Corrina Wright (5th and 6th generation of the Oliver family) are both proud members of the exclusive Penfolds Grange Growers club.

How we found them/How Richard found them:

There was a buzz on the wine scene about Australian producers growing alternative, namely Italian, varietals. I stumbled across OT, and after a period of discussion and a visit to sunny Adelaide we were proud to bring in their wines. Like a needle in a haystack, it is difficult to find quality and value in Australian wines. However, your search will be over when you try the beautiful wines crafted by the Taranga family.

Oliver's Taranga

Oliver’s Taranga sits upon 110 hectares of land where different red and white grape varieties are grown. They have long pioneered the introduction of varieties beyond the international ‘usual suspects’ and currently grow Mataro, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Vermentino, Fiano, Tempranillo, Mencia, Touriga, Sagrantino, and White Frontignac. Each block is individually nurtured depending on varietal, vine age, soil, location, winery requirements, and the targeted bottle range.

Some of their low-yielding, high-quality Australian Shiraz grapes have been processed with outstanding results and gained an outstanding reputation. Year-on-year these grapes are grown for and go into exclusive blends such as the Penfolds Grange Shiraz and Eileen Hardy Shiraz. Oliver’s Taranga own portfolio, in turn, consists of a variety of small batch wines from the different varieties grown in the estate, with their Cabernet Sauvignon and Australian Shiraz as flagship labels.

Oliver’s Taranga are founding members of the McLaren Vale Sustainable Winegrowing Australia program, using no pesticides and organic fungicides only. Over winter you’ll find grazing sheep working their way through the vineyards and naturally nurturing the soil! In terms of winemaking, they ferment with wild yeasts, in most cases with zero acidification. Sulphur is added just prior to bottling and in minimal quantities. None of the wines are fined, making them not only delicious but also vegan-friendly.
