The first thing we want to highlight is that all proceeds from this flagship and historic Napa winery go to charity, helping children all around the world by improving impoverished conditions they have to endure. Dick and Ann Grace hold the context of the price of their wines in high regard and the ethos of people if centre to what they do, and believe in.
In today’s world, Napa is full of large wineries. It is hard to believe that the emerging, farmland Napa Valley of 1976 ever really existed. It was in 1976 that Dick and Ann Grace moved their lives and family to Napa. At the time, it was just another agricultural region where prunes and walnuts were as viable a crop as grapes, and pig farms dotted the landscape. Their first vineyard was quite literally their front lawn, one acre in total. Grace Family vineyards started out as a family hobby. The first harvest was picked by family and friends in 1978 and taken to nearby Caymus Winery in the back of a station wagon to be made and bottled. It wasn’t until they tasted it that they realised what they could produce from the vineyard site and high quality soil on their front lawn.
With interest in California wines blossoming, Grace Family Vineyards quickly became the first “cult” wine of Napa seeing strong demand way past their production capacity. Their first ever vintage of 1978 scored a huge 98 points. Since then the scoring has maintained the highest scores from advocates such as Robert Parker.
Sustainability scope: Grace have proven their persistence to organic techniques very early on. With their vineyards being on their front lawn, there has never been the need to spray or chemically treat the vines. Simple farmed grapes that are cared for year round produce exceptional wine – this fits with exactly the ethos of Wanderlust’s sustainability aims.
