Regent

A Sturdy Vibrant Red

Regent is a dark-skinned, red grape variety developed in Geilweilerhof in Germany and only allowed into wine production as late as 1989.

It was a complex three-way crossing of Silvaner, Muller Thurgau and Chambourcin. It shows excellent disease resistance, making it perfect for cool climate regions.

Flavour

Regent wines are known for their full red fruit flavours of raspberry and cranberry.

Style Range

DRINK YOUNG STYLE
Nearly all Regent is made into easy drinking, fruity wines, either as a varietal or in a blend.

Structure

Regent grapes have a thick skin, but also coloured flesh, meaning the wines have good dark colour without too much skin contact.  That means this grape is capable of producing deep-coloured wines with soft tannins.

The wines often have only moderate acidity, which can be a blessing in cooler climate regions.

Food Pairings

Regent’s fresh fruit flavours and low tannins make them great wines for soft stews and charcuterie boards.

Growing Regions

GERMANY
Developed here, and still exists in small patches, but on the wane.

ENGLAND & WALES
Disease resistance means it has found a home in the cooler climates of England and Wales.  It certainly show some promise with many winemakers producing very elegant examples, namely as vineyards get older and fruit gains elegance.

ELSEWHERE
Cool climate regions of Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium and the coolest regions of Washington State in the USA have modest plantings.
